Apple Trade In Program: How Does it Work & Is it a Good Value

Published

on

If you are upgrading to a new MacBook Pro you may be tempted to trade your old MacBook Pro into Apple for credit towards your new model. This is an easy way to save on your new MacBook Pro without hassling with selling online or locally.

Here’s how long you have if you choose to go this route, what you need to know about the process and how to make sure things go smoothly. We also have a warning about who shouldn’t use this service and where to check for other values.

If you are trading in a laptop made by anyone other than Apple, stop and find somewhere else to sell it or donate it. Apple will not give you anything for an old Windows laptop, or a new Windows laptop for that matter. If it’s really old and just needs to be recycled, they will do that, but most of the time you can find a better home elsewhere.

How Long Do I Have to Send My Laptop to Apple

You get 14 days to send your old laptop to Apple and get the price you locked in. This is from the date you lock in your price, but you may end up a little farther out if you bought one of the customized 16-inch MacBook Pro options.

Apple sends you a box to send it back, so once you get that, you should make sure you send it off to Apple soon, and within that two week period.

Can I Take My MacBook Pro to Apple?

While you can do Apple trade-ins in store, you cannot do this for any Apple notebook. The in-store option is only for the iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. You will need to wait for your return box and send it in to Apple using the pre-paid shipping label and packaging.

How Long Until I Get Trade-In Credit

It can take up to three weeks for the trade-in process to complete. When this is done, you will get a credit to your original payment method, or you will get a gift card. In some cases, you may get credit for a part and a gift card for the remainder, if you traded in an item worth more than your purchase.

Can I Cancel My Trade-In?

You can cancel your trade-in before you ship the device to Apple. If you ship it to Apple, you can no longer cancel it. The only way you can cancel one it is shipped is if Apple revises the offer to a lower amount. Then you can reject it and get your trade back.

Do I Need to Erase My Mac?

If you are sending in a MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro to Apple, you need to remove your data from the device before you send it back. Apple includes directions with the trade in to walk you through the process. The shortlist of what to do includes;

  1. Back up your Mac.
  2. Sign out of iTunes if you are on macOS Mojave.
  3. Sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My Mac.
  4. Sign Out of iMessage
  5. Erase Your Drive and Re-Install macOS

This will take a little bit of time to complete, but it is a necessary step. Here’s the guide on how to erase a disk on your Mac

Is the Apple Trade-In Program A Good Value

Based on the numbers we are seeing the Apple trade-in program for the MacBook Pro is a good value. We’re seeing almost $200 more than a local offer and about $50 less than through GoRoostr or Sell Your Mac. You can likely get a little more through one of these programs and you can still avoid selling to a person directly.

All of these options are lower than Facebook Marketplace or eBay, but you don’t have to meet up, pay any fees or worry about hassles or unreliable sellers.
